All Alone

Friday

My roommate is leaving today to go home. He found a guy in one of his classes who is going home as well. He lives pretty close to where he lives so he offered to drop him off directly at his house. He got a pretty good deal too because at first he had to contribute 20 dollars for gas money but a day before he left the guy told him that it would be 10 dollars. So I guess I’m going to have a lot of alone time with just me and my thoughts, and I may order a pizza with my suitemates, but we’ll see.

The Uniform

Thursday

All of the gear we had ordered for karate arrived today. Everyone who had ordered their gear went to sensei, who had all the boxes with him, and got everything they ordered. We are required to order an athletic cup, sparring gloves, and a mouth guard. The gi, or uniform, is optional but since I had a little bit of extra money, I decided to get the gi as well. It fit well and the gloves are really cool too. I ordered my mouth guard in blue since it’s my favorite color. Now I just have to practice how to tie my belt.

Today was a Good Day

Wednesday

It seems like spring just came out of nowhere and smacked winter out of its way because it was windy and sunny and all of the snow that was here yesterday was gone and the streets and sidewalk had turned into little streams from all of the melting snow. My friend and I both get out of class at the same time so we decided to get some Chinese food from the Commons. After we got it, we headed back to my dorm and ate while listening to music and hanging out with some of the other guys from my hall. It was a pretty relaxed day.

Sight is a Liability

Tuesday

Today in karate we learned about being able to be aware of our surroundings and how we moved with our eyes closed. Our sensei wasn’t able to be in class today, so he had one of his higher ranked students teach class. He is a brown belt and is training to receive his black belt. He had us practice a series of moves called a kata. After a few repetitions we had to do it with our eyes closed. After that we had to walk a straight line and then do it with our eyes closed.

Back to the Basics

Monday

Today I finally decided to wash my sweater that I had put off washing for some time now. I had said I was going to do it, but I had never got around to doing it. In the meantime, I had to wear my big fluffy sweater, and don’t get me wrong, it’s really warm, but it had also started to get really warm outside and it didn’t want to wear such a big sweater anymore. It also wasn’t exactly my favorite color either, so I’m glad I got around to washing it so I didn’t have to wear the fluffy one.

Blackout

Thursday

Today was probably one of the coldest days out of the entire week. I could already tell how cold it was by the time I woke up. I couldn’t get out of bed because of how cold my room was, but I had to do it anyways. Walking to karate was horrible, it was so cold that the moisture from my breath was freezing to my beard and mustache. I was so tired today that I was having random blackouts during some of my classes. I would feel fine for one minute and then suddenly I would blink and I would be staring at my desk wondering what happened. After that I kind of felt like everyone was staring at me but I don’t think they actually were.

Career Fair

Wednesday

I had to attend the career fair that was going on in the SUB. I had to go because I had to talk to at least 2 employers and get some flyers from them. After I had talked to them, I needed to fill out a summary of what I had learned over there, but being a freshman and not having much experience, they didn’t seem too eager about hiring us or even giving us a lot of information about applying for much of their things. I had even dressed up all fancy and tried to look professional for it but to no avail.

Love Me Some Karate

Tuesday

The days where I have my karate class are starting to become my favorite days. If it weren’t for the fact that it is at 8 in the morning, it would be my absolute favorite class out of my whole schedule. Today we went over all the blocks, punches, and kicks that we have learned so far. After we went over them, we learned a new kick which is called a flying kick. It’s just basically jumping up in the air and doing a front kick. It was pretty easy, but after doing a bunch of other kicks and exercises, it got tiring but the more I do them, the easier everything is getting.

It's Cold Mane

Monday

These last few days have been really cold. Going out in the mornings has been the worst and most dreaded part of the day for me. I have a really thin sweater so it doesn't really give me much protection from the cold. So I remembered that I had brought a really fluffy sweater from home that has a wool lining and is really soft and warm. It is like getting a big hug from a big teddy bear and is almost impenetrable to the icy wind. I love that sweater, I think it might have been my dad’s, I hope he doesn't miss it.
